Basic Calculations

Simple Interest Calculation

This provides the total simple interest earned or paid.

Compound Interest Calculation

Compound interest is slightly more complex. Using the same cells (A1:Principal, A2:Interest Rate, A3:Years), and adding cell A5 for ‘compounding frequency per year’, the future value (FV) can be calculated in cell A6:

=A1*(1+A2/A5)^(A3*A5)

Financial Functions

Present Value (PV)

Determine the current worth of a future sum. Assuming a future value in cell B1, an interest rate in cell B2, and the number of periods in cell B3, the present value is in cell B4:

=PV(B2,B3,-B1)

The rate is the interest rate per period, Nper is the total number of payment periods, and FV is the future value.

Net Present Value (NPV)

NPV analyzes the profitability of a project by discounting future cash flows back to their present value. Enter the discount rate in C1. List the cash flows in cells C2:C6. The NPV is calculated in C7:

=NPV(C1,C2:C6)

Then subtract any initial investment which might be in cell C8. The final NPV is in cell C9 and equals to : =C7-C8. A positive NPV generally indicates a profitable investment.

Internal Rate of Return (IRR)

IRR is the discount rate that makes the NPV of all cash flows from a particular project equal to zero. Assuming the initial investment is in cell D1 and subsequent cash flows are in cells D2:D6, the IRR is calculated in cell D7:

=IRR(D1:D6)

A higher IRR generally indicates a more desirable investment.
